question about dirction keys in vim

hi guys, i just start learning UNIX, i try to use Putty in home to do some exercise, when i use vi or vim to edit some file, i found that the dircetion and backspace keys relate to other characters, it was inconvenience for me to edit some file, does there have any measures to address that problem?
    Thanks for the help

It's about the different character sets. Your best bet would be to use hjkl for direction and del for deleting chars, or even x. Although your nick IS lazyboy7, if you do a Google search after "vi putty arrow keys", you will find your answers. Best of luck.
